Anvils are your main way of working with metals, Casting will only get you so far and makes the most basic quality Tools. As with all Metals anvils also follow the Metal Tiers thus you will need to upgrade your anvil as you progress. There are 10 anvils total, one stone and 9 metal ones. Anvils can only work metals of equal tiers or weld one tier higher.
Obtaining
Your very first anvil will be made of Stone, raw Igneous to be exact. Right Click on one of these types of raw rock with a hammer to instantly create an anvil. All the Metal anvils are made from Double Ingots.

Use
Not only will you be using anvils to smith Tools but you will be using them to make a multitude of other metallic crafting components!
